The Victorian Goldfields Railway was built in 1872. It is a popular tourist attraction for people who are interested in history, steam trains, and travel and exploration of Victoria's Central Goldfields region.
The railway follows the route of the original goldfields railway. It starts in Ballarat and it goes through Bendigo, Castlemaine, Maldon, and Colac. Travel times between Castlemaine and Maldon are approximately 45 minutes.
From Castlemaine Railway Station you connect with the 11.30 am train to Maldon for a 2-hour stopover to enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of the cafes or pubs or enjoy a little shopping. The return train departs at 2.45pm from Maldon, before arriving back Castlemaine at approximately 3.30pm.
The Victorian Goldfields Railway also stages numerous events during the year including the Easter Wine Train, Ales on Rails and special steam train rides for kids.
